Life Coach for Men – A Choice Checklist

Life Coach for Men

Gone are the days when life coaching was reserved for celebrities, business executives, and CEOs.

In the past decade, the number of life coaches for men has rapidly increased, resulting in personal coaching being available to people from all levels of society.

However, the increasing number of coaches presents a problem…

How do you pick the right coach?

Today’s post dives deep into what you need to look out for when choosing a man coach. Here’s what you’ll learn:

What Is Life Coaching for Men?

Before you pick a coach, it’s essential to understand what life coaching is and whether you need a life strategist or a different professional.

Men’s life coaching is a collaborative process that seeks to empower men by helping them create, meet, and exceed goals in their professional and personal lives. A men’s life coach helps you to gain better clarity and develop new approaches to help you crush your goals.

It’s important to note that life coaching is profoundly different from therapy, counseling, mentoring, or consulting.

Therapy allows you to explore emotional issues in your life. If you suffer from emotional trauma, depression, or grief, a therapist or counselor is the right professional to help you.

Some people confuse mentoring and coaching since they both entail seeking advice and guidance from other people. However, unlike coaching, mentoring is semi-structured and involves an already successful professional sharing knowledge, skills, and experience to help others progress in their lives and careers.

Consulting entails hiring a professional to deliver a specific solution or advice. Consultants don’t empower you as coaches do. Their work involves telling you what to do or even doing it for you.

What do you really need? Your answer to this question will determine whether you work with a therapist, consultant, mentor, or coach.

What Type of Coach Should You Work With?

What goals do you want to achieve?

  •  Are you looking to change jobs?
  • Perhaps you want to improve your leadership and people management skills,
  • Or maybe you want to increase your confidence, happiness, relationships, life balance, and finances.

Your answer to these questions will determine the best coach to support you.

Executive Life Coach for Men

Are you a business owner or a corporate employee looking to improve your leadership and performance at work?

An executive life strategist is what you need.

An executive coach guides you as you navigate work-related issues, ensuring you get the most out of yourself and your team. With an executive life strategist, you’ll become a better leader and will improve your work-life balance all while performing at your optimum level.

Career Coaching

A career coach works with you to determine what you want from your career and how to get there.

You can seek out a career life strategist if you’re looking to transition to a new job, advance in your field, or retire. Some men also seek out career coaches to help them discover the types of jobs that suit them most.

Transformational Life Coaching

Transformational life coaches help you to achieve your goals by pointing out and helping you change limiting beliefs that keep you from crushing your goals.

However, unlike other coaching, transformative coaches don’t give you strategies to help you reach your goals. They only guide you to determine and change limiting beliefs.

If you always fail to accomplish your goals, never seem to stay focused and motivated, then a transformational life strategist is who you need.

Specialized Coaches

As men, we struggle with different areas of our lives. These include

  • Finances
  • Relationships
  • Confidence
  • Time management
  •  Stress management, and
  • Energy management

Which is why there are coaches who specialize in helping you improve each of these areas of your lives.

If you’re looking to improve your finances, boost your confidence, or build better relationships, a specialized coach in that area is what you need to support you on your journey.

Life Coaching Methods Used for Men

Every specialist you work with will employ a specific style. Before you hire a coach, ask him to explain his working methodology. Here are a few answers you’re likely to get:

Advice and Experience-Based Coaching

It’s said that experience Is the best teacher. However, most of the time, we wait for experiences to happen rather than facilitating them.

Experience-based coaching aims at creating learning experiences that help the client improve himself.

With experience-based coaching, you may be required to complete an obstacle course or a challenge, then explain what you learned from the experience.

Accountability Coaching

Do you start working on your goals, but give up several weeks after the motivation runs out?

Then it’s time you hired an accountability coach.

An accountability coach will be your secret weapon to crushing all your goals all year long. Your coach holds you accountable for achieving your personal and professional goals.

With an accountability life strategist, excuses and lack of motivation become past tense.

Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) Coaching for Men

Ever wonder what certain people do to achieve success?

Well, neuro-linguistic programming (NLP) can help you with this. NLP entails analyzing strategies used by successful people, then modeling them to reach personal goals.

NLP professionals will study the language, thoughts, and behavioral patterns of the successful than model a program that seeks to copy and emulate these patterns; therefore, support you on your journey to success.

NLP coaching aims at changing the way you think, feel, and behave.

Nowadays, most coaches offer NLP as an add on service to other coaching methods.

Rapid Transformational Coaching

Pioneered by Marisa Peer, Rapid Transformational coaching (RTT) is a training method that focuses’ on working with the subconscious mind.

RTT entails combining powerful strategies such as NLP, psychotherapy, and CBT, to remove mental blocks that keep you from hitting your goals.

Coaching That Includes Subconscious Processes

Unresolved issues, including child trauma, may prevent you from achieving your goals.

This is why some coaches use strategies targeting the subconscious mind to heal unprocessed emotions, feelings, or childhood trauma.

Doing this allows an individual to focus on new goals without subconscious blocks.

Checklist to Choose the Perfect Fit

Whether you choose to work with an executive coach, a transformational life strategist, or a career coach, don’t be in a hurry.  Take time to vet each candidate carefully.

Consider the following factors when vetting your coach:

Qualifications and Accreditation

Does the International Coaching Federation accredit the coach?

Only work with a coach who’s been personally accredited by the ICF. Doing so means you’re working with a professional who’s received ample training and has passed the ICF quality check.

Testimonials

What are people saying about the coach’s services?

Are there satisfied customers?

Check the coach’s website, linked in, and social media pages to get a feel of what people are saying about their services.

Look for well-detailed testimonials where a client explains where they were before meeting the coach and where they are after coaching sessions.

Experience

How long has the coach been working in the coaching industry?

When vetting coaches, look for one with experience. Look for one who’s been in the coaching business for a while. The more years, the more experience he’s likely to bring to the table.

Specialization

Are you looking to change jobs? Look for a career life strategist

Are you looking to improve your finances? Look for a men’s financial life coach.

Are you looking to improve your leadership skills at work? Look for an executive coach for men.

Your ideal coach will need to specialize in the area of life you’re looking to improve.

How Does the Coach Live?

Does the coach live up to their training?

Do a deep dive into their social media to see if they practice what they teach. What does he or she share on social media?

Do they offer helpful tips for free on social media?

These are good indicators of the coach’s character and personality.

Clients

Who were their past clients?

Can the coach provide case studies of past coachees who’ve had similar goals and challenges as you?

Charges

How much are you willing and able to pay for life coaching?

Look for a coach who charges a decent fee for his services. However, don’t work with an overly cheap coach.

It may be an indication that he isn’t confident with his skills or lacks experience — both of which are red flags.

Prices for Men’s Life Coaching

There’s no standardized cost for life coaching.

However, most life coaches will price their services similar to other helping professionals, such as therapists and psychologists.

Most of the time, this is between $75 and $250 per hour.

Some coaches also have monthly packages which are often offered in discount.

Questions to Ask Your Coach

Several coaches have passed your choice checklist. Now It’s time to conduct a personal interview.

In the free consultation session, ask your potential coach several questions to determine whether he or she is a good fit.

If you don’t know which questions to ask, you can check out this hard-hitting list of questions to ask your life coach.

Test Your Coach

Not satisfied with the answers you get from the coach?

Why not test their program before making a substantial financial commitment.

Pay for a few sessions (I recommend the first two) to test out the curriculum. During your trial session look for the following quality indicators:

  • Does the coach give you full undisclosed attention?
  • Is he judgmental?
  • Does he allow you to find solutions? Or does he propose solutions directly?
  • What vibe do you get? Preacher or coach?
  • Does the coach allow you to reflect on the sessions and discuss the next steps forward?

Ready for Your Next Coach?

Now you know what to look for when hiring a life strategist

Don’t just go for the first person you find on Google.

Do your due diligence and make sure your coach adheres to the above checklist.
